I feel REALLY slighted...

Warning, big rant, pity-party, less-than-humble comments ahead...

So, not sure how to handle info I just received... basically, I just found out I am getting paid crap in comparison to the rest of my team.  I work in product management.  I am titled as a Senior Manager.  Our group is full of directors, senior directors and then we also have two managers.  I am the only senior manager.  I do the same thing as all the directors and the senior directors (we have the same job responsibilities - different markets).  Actually, many would say that I do more because I have three markets and my counterparts only have part of one (our largest market, whereas I serve the smaller revenue "emerging areas" - the issue is less revenue does not mean less work when you are doing market strategy, it actually means more!).

Anyway, I found out today that the two managers that were just recently hired and that have 25% the responsibility that I do (if that) are both making about $10K more than me!  I am so upset right now, I don't know what to do...  To make matters worse, I was offered another job in a different (much cheaper city) making $30K more than I do now... I don't want to take that job as it would have me moving back to KC, so that is not an option.

Also, just to clarify, they aren't making more money because I am not a valued employee... In our last rating cycle, the VP (my boss) and SVP gave me the highest rank (less than 1% of the work population get the rating and my boss had never given one out in his previous 8 years at the company and they gave me a bonus 3x that of others in terms of %).  Also, I am the only PM that has a record of complete approval for all project/business case requests and have done 5x as many as my counterparts.

Some additional history, I started in a different position which is a lower pay expectation.  My current boss tapped me for product management, but the move was considered lateral, thus no increase.  After being a manager in PM for about a year, they did a review of job responsibility versus title and looked at my title and said, "jah is doing higher level work than a manager in PM", thus they "re-mapped" me to Senior Manager.  Re-mapping is the company way to bump someone up without a compensation increase.

Anyway, the point of this big rant is what the heck should I do?  My boss and I are fairly close.  He pretty much loves me and everyone thinks he favors me... my issue is that if he really loves me so much, why the heck would he allow this disparity to continue (he had to sign off on the newbies salaries).

On another note, we are going to restructure in the next month, so in those terms it will be good to be the lowliest paid and I probably shouldn't make a stink right now, but my company is huge, we make a ton of money and they can afford to pay me more!!!

Your thoughts... should I keep my mouth shut and just continue doing my job (which I LOVE!), or should I push the envelope?

Sorry, not sure what advice to give ya. Why isn't moving back to KC an option? Then we could go shopping together when I come up:)

I wouldn't be so upset, don't take it personally, it is probably all because you moved from a lower position that didn't dictate a raise. My boyfriend just found out that one of his coworkers who has less responsibility and has been at his job less time than him earns about $10K more, while the other managers make about $30K more (which is to be expected).

I think its all a matter of how you negotiate when you first start a job. Your coworkers came in after you and asked for more. And they got it. I feel like jobs typically make an offer to you based on what you used to earn at your last position.

If I were you I wouldn't take it personally, or insultingly. Its a matter of business strategy. It sounds like you are a valued employee and you have earned your right to a better salary. Why don't you go to your boss and ask for a raise using the points you made above as justification?

This is my major issue with your salary concerns. Unless they both came in with much more experience or fancy letters after thier name, there isn't any reason on God's green Earth why a new employee should be making more than you. Dare I ask if they are men? evileye That remapping thing is bullshit. Stupid ass greedy companies. I understand why they did it- but a title doesn't pay the bills.

I'm actually sitting here very very pissed off for you. I understand that on the surface restructuring might not be a good time to ask for a raise- but I actually think now would be a good time. They can restructure you into a better pay scale without much effort since they will be doing that across the board, right? Also, let your boss know about the job offer- he doesn't have to know that you don't want it. The simple fact that someone is offering you more means that you are actually worth more.

I'm really sorry. As others have said, don't take it personally, your boss has his own budget to stick to and his own managers to answer to, it isn't always easy for them to do the absolute best for their employees. It's actually, unfortunately, somewhat common for new employees to be brought into a company making more money than longer term employees. Salary adjustments just don't always keep up w/ the market. This was an issue for me at the job I left a month ago. They made excuse after excuse about why they couldn't increase my salary. My former boss and I are still close and he told me that when they looked for my replacement the salary I was getting wasn't competing so they had to drastically increase the salary and they still ended up hiring someone w/ basically zero experience. It's total bullshit.

I would go ahead and talk to your boss about a raise. Provide info and research on salaries for comparable positions. And, don't feel badly that he knew about the disparity. It's a business and he probably has his own managers to answer too.
