Bathrooms and cell phones?
Permalink Closed

This morning, I was in the company bathroom (which is tiny and only has 2 stalls, btw) and some woman comes in and suddenly, she starts talking -- she's leaving someone a voicemail message on her cell. In the middle of her yapping away, the toilet flushes LOUDLY. There is no way that the recipient of that voicemail isn't going to hear a ginormous toilet flush sound in the background. Honestly, the talking lady didn't even seem to care at all.

And last week, some different woman came in, blabbing on her cell about real estate. People are going about their-- ahem-- bathroom business and toilets are flushing and again, she's carrying on with her conversation as if she was in her office or something.

Is this some generally accepted thing nowadays, to talk on your cell in the bathroom? I cannot think of any reason why either of those 2 women couldn't have finished their conversations/left their msgs before they came into the bathroom.... What do you girls think?

I do it, but only if I'm talking to my sisters.

I hate it when people talk on the phone while they're in the bathroom, I won't even do it at home (unless it's dh and I really, really gotta go, but even then I wait till afterwards to flush). You can always call someone back or hold it if the phone call is that important.

It must be acceptable. I hear it all the time. People where I live do EVERYTHING on there cell phones - Go to the bank, drop kids off, go to the bathroom, shop, pay at the register while talking and not even acknowledging the cashier, sit at resturants etc etc etc.

Its a bit tacky ...

A few women in my office do it, too.  Sooooo tacky! My office's bathroom has four stalls, so there's always a toilet flushing.

We have a lady at my office who does it every single time she goes into the restroom. It drives a coworker and me insane!!

People do it all the time, as mentioned; and it never fails to amaze me.

I deliberately try to make as much noise as possible, but it really doesn't seem to bother people who are on the phone.

I see this a lot too.  I think it's a bit rude.  I hate in when someone in front of me in line (like at the grocery store or the bank) is on the phone.  It always takes them longer to finish their transaction because they are distracted by whatever is going on in their phone convo.  Plus, they are completely ignoring the cashier or whoever.  If I had a CS or retail job, I know it would bother me when customers did that to me.

As for being on the phone while in the bathroom, I'll do it if it's my sister or DH and I have to go really bad.

I'm sorry, I think it gross. You don't need to be doing your business while talking on the cell phone. Tacky!

Ugh I hate it when people do this! That's rude and disgusting! I won't go to the bathroom while on the phone unless, like others said, it someone I'm super close to. Even then, I won't flush until after I'm off the phone so they don't know what I was doing! My freshman year of college, my RA would talk on the phone in the bathroom all the freaking time. It wasn't just her friends, either - once I was in there while she was talking to her bank!

It is absolutely tacky. I always make extra noise too.

I always hang up a call before checking out somewhere, and I'll hang up if I'm shopping in a small store. If it's a big store I don't think it's too bad of a faux pas. When I am ready to check out, I'll always tell my caller "I'm about to check out, and I don't want to be THAT GIRL, so I'm going to let you go now." Others on their phones never take the hint.

I think it's so disgusting. I see it occassionally and I think it is so rude to the person on the other end of the line. I myself would be totally offended if I was talking to someone on the phone and then all the sudden hear toilets flushing in the background.

I also think it's rude to talk on cell phones while checking out. I've been a cashier and it's just so rude to be totally ignored by the customer and wait on them while they are too busy talking to pay.

I guess this is the kind of world we live in these days.

The bf actually deliberately calls me from the bathroom. smile.gif If he's out at the bar he figures that the bathroom is the ideal place to call from because it's quiet (never quite sure why he doesn't just go outside!). Also, when he's at work and he calls in the middle of the day I can almost guarantee it's because he had to uh, do #2. He figures then that that's the best time to call cause he's not doing anything else. It actually doesn't bother me that much- as long as it's not a business call or otherwise important call. I've done it to the bf and my sister as well. I do put the phone down however, and then do my business, and then flush as I'm walking out (I wash my hands first, and then flush!).

It may be tacky (I've only done it at home) but at least it's not as rude as being on your cell phone at the cash register!

One time, while working as a cashier, I refused to wait on someone who was on the phone. I just stood there with my arms crossed. He just set his stuff down, turned, and walked out once he got the point- - never stopped talking!

My husband and I were at Target a few months ago. There was a very nice man working the cash register. The woman in line in front of us never stopped talking on her cell the whole time. Once she left, I looked at the guy. He looked so defeated! I mentioned something about how rude that was of her to do that; and he agreed. It made him feel better to vent about it.

That is so gross when people do that.

I admit I have talked on the phone in a public bathroom once, but there was no one in there at the time and iwhen someone came in I went out into the little hallway leading to the bathroom to talk. It was when I first started dating my bf and I was out to dinner with my parents, they didn't know about him yet and the call was important so I hid out in the bathroom to talk.ashamed

I get so irritated with people on their cell phones. I cannot stand to hear someone talking on the phone in the bathroom--I'm one of those that will make extra noise, like flushing the toilet, banging the stall door shut, etc.

And I hate when people are yapping on their phones and ignoring the person ringing them up at the register. It's so unbelievably rude. I hate feeling like I have to apologize for a stranger's total lack of basic manners.

ITA! On side note I thinkit's extremely rude for people to not HAND the cashier their cc, or money at the register......It's a sign of respect dammit!

oh but back to the lecture at hand. today I was in the shower at the gym......A lady was yapping so damn loud (I couldn't tell if she was on her cell or talking to an actual person).I came out of the shower she was still yapping, and next thing you know it sounded like a machine gun in the stall........she was taking a dump while on her cell at the freakin gym..........I nearly gagged! Sorry to be so graphic but people have NO SHAME!
