at-home color question... any hairdressers out there?

are you using a color-safe shampoo? also artec makes a nice color-depositing shampoo that i like. (that has different tones of each color, too, ie. a warm or cool red) i think john frieda has a red-shampoo, but i've never used it.

that said, red fades really fast. if you want to refresh it with color, maybe a glossing? it's semi-permanent and non damaging, but you will lose the blonde.

I'm not a stylist, but I've gone from blonde to red a number of times and it is hard! I've found that especially after the first dye, it fades super fast. Subsequent touch ups usually aren't as bad.

But, yeah, red is just really hard to keep (and I only wash my hair once, maybe twice, a week).

I really like the artec line for colored hair. Warning: Their color depositing shampoo in red will stain your pillows and white clothes when your hair is wet.

I can't speak to damage, but I'd probably try to wait another week or two before dying again.

No I have not been using a color-safe shampoo... I was too cheap to go buy one until I use up the shampoo I already have. However, I think I will re-consider and go buy one. While I'm there, I will also look at the glossing.

luckylily, it's good to hear that the times after the first one will fade less. That makes a lot of sense. And do you use a color depositing shampoo and conditioner? I have the Aveda conditioner and it seems really good (the only thing is that I really have to dye my whole head red- it turned some of my blonde kind of pink-ish red).

I didn't realize there was such a thing as a depositing shampoo. Will it make a difference if I am using a depositing conditioner?

Im a natural blonde, but I have been a red head for about 4 years now. I have to have my hair colored every 3 weeks because it fades so fast. I used to go every 6 weeks , but I hated how it looked if I waited that long.

I've been dying my hair red for about 3 years now (natural color is light brown . . . I think) and my hair used to fade really fast. I was dying it every 3-4 weeks.

Then I started using the John Frieda for red line and that worked pretty well. Now I use the Aveda Madder Root line for reds and that works AWESOME!! I can usually wait 5-6 weeks, which is what is recommended and it's because my roots are bugging me, not because my hair is fading.

The salon shampoo and conditioner is more expensive, but I think it's worth it for the reds because it fades SOOOOOO fast.

I am not a stylist either, but two of my old best friends were cosmetologists and helped me do my hair at home dozens of times, I have been bleached blond, strawberry blonde and deep reddish brown.

I would advise recoloring the hair with a semi-permanent for the purpose of refreshing the color. It won't do as much damage as permanent and if your hair is processed, or otherwise ever previously bleached or dry/damaged enough, the semi-perm pigment, along with the permanent already there, will stick to it for several months with gentle care.
