Sarah Jessica Parker to launch low-end clothing line

Former 'Sex and the City' star and Gap spokeswoman set to launch low-end women's sportswear label, 'Bitten,' this June.

By Parija B. Kavilanz, CNNMoney.com senior writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Style icon Sarah Jessica Parker only wore designer clothes in "Sex and the City." But her own sportswear line, which launches this June, promises affordable fashion for the masses, with every item priced less than $20.

Parker, a former spokeswoman for Gap Inc., (Charts) has paired up exclusively with mall-based collegiate wear seller Steve & Barry's to sell her "Bitten" label beginning June 7.

Steve & Barry's has become one of America's fastest-growing national mall-based concepts selling clothing and accessories at $20 or less.

In a statement, the company said Parker decided to partner with Steve & Barry's after learning of the company's philosophy to offer high-quality merchandise at the lowest possible prices.

"Women should be able to wear great clothes and not lie in bed at night feeling guilty about how much money they've spent," Parker said in a statement.

The tagline for the collection reads: "Fashion is not a luxury, it's a right."

The company said the label will consist of about 500 clothing items and accessories, including knit shirts, wool and cashmere sweaters, dresses, lingerie, jeans, jewelry and footwear.

I read something about this in this month's Glamour or Marie Claire or something. But it didn't say which store it would be in - I'm so disappointed that it's in a store I've never even heard of :( Everything is under $20, I think.

ETA: What?! I just looked at the website and apparently there is one just 10 minutes away from me! I'd never even heard of it before...

I may be the lone voice here, but I'm not overly excited. My reasoning is this...lately most celeb-driven lines have been pretty disappointing. And realistically, the celebs are not the ones choosing what they wear....that's their stylists' jobs...so why do we assume they'll be able to put out a cute line?!? Okay, maybe I'm ranting a bit here (serious lack of caffeine in my bloodstream) but SJP became a 'fashion icon' because of the show she was on, where all of her outfits were put together by people other than her.

I've never heard of this store either...

I saw a few of the pieces in Glamour (SJP was wearing them), and I didn't think any of them were that cute. In that article it mentions high-qual clothing at a cheap price, but they also say they make cashmere sweaters. How on earth could you make a good cashmere sweater for $20? confused And yeah, SJP only became a style icon because, like leah leanna said, someone else picked out her clothes on SATC.

Maybe some Steve & Barry's are different, but the one I always go to is on Univ. of Michigan's campus and sells super-cheap quality college tees for super-cheap prices. We always laugh hysterically when we go there, because it seems like everything is "buy one, get six free!!"

I agree about the cashmere too - there is NO WAY they can make a quality sweater for under $20.

I tivo'ed Oprah because I am dying to see what the pieces look like. There will also be a segment on the Target wedding dresses.

all steve & barry's must be the same!  or at least ones in MI and CA :)  if anything, it'll help spiffy up s&b's name/image.

Ugh!  ITA!  I was so excited when I heard about it UNTIL I heard it was a Steve and Barry's.  Then I was sooo disappointed.  That store is sooo hilarious!  It's my BF's favorite store for sports memorabilia and everything is sooo cheap!

Me too!  Their stuff is so cheapo and low quality..  I'm not looking forward to it.   I like the philosophy of having designer clothes that are affordable for real women but there's got to be a middle ground.  I just don't see how SJP and that store go together.

They have an enormous t-shirt wall with little sayings like "i have crabs - joes crab shack" and "beer, helping people be more attractive since 1882."  Classy.

Why couldn't she just design her clothing for a store like Target?

The funniest thing for me is the name..."Bitten"?  That's such an awful name.  It reminds me of one of those risque shows in Vegas that would be shown at like The Westward Ho or The Stratosphere...

pics are on oprah's website.

The cashmere is a cashmereblend. That makes sense, but I hate false advertising! It's probably only 20% cashmere or something. cry

I like some of what I see in the pics on Oprah's site.  Nothing too innovative, but there are some cute basics.  And the prices are hard to believe!

I'm withholding judgment until I can actually see the line IRL, though...

Steve & Barry's doesn't offer much for the ladies IMO, so getting SJP to endorse this line was probably a pretty good idea. (Yes, I consider it an endorsement like Air Jordans.) I think a lot of those outfits look cute. And good for them for expanding the line to a size 22.

I'm dissappointed.  There are some cute basics in the collection, but I just don't believe that stuff at this price point is of a quality that I would be interested in purchasing.  And, I've never even heard of Steve and Barry's, so there probably isn't one near me anyway.

I'm probably being overly hippie about this, but the motto "Fashion is not a luxury, it's a right" bugs me immensly.  I love fashion, but free speech and access to clean air are rights, fashion isn't.

it looks pretty average and doesn't seem to relate to SJPs style or anything to me

It does look pretty average.... but at those prices it's a better deal than f21. Yes, it's average, basic, and probably really crappy quality. But a few of the pieces are cute (I especially love the dresses, seersucker pants, and one of the coats looks promising) and I imagine I'll approach it like I approach f21: it's fun and cheap, and I'm okay if it doesn't last very long because I didn't spend much money on it

as much as i love fashion, i also hate statements along these lines.  I'm more okay though with the use of the word "fashion"- which to me implies style and aesthetic in many areas- as opposed to the word "shopping".  I hate hate hate sayings like, "i live to shop".  Are you effing kidding me?
