outfit for a wedding redux -- is this okay?!
Permalink Closed

Some of you may recall that I have been debating what to wear to an important wedding that I'm going to in Scotland in a little less than a month.  It's an afternoon wedding and although it's not black tie, it's going to be rather dressy with a sit-in down dinner type of thing in the evening.

I really loved this dress, so I got it to wear:

The plan was to wear it with a white blazer, pearls and black sandals... and maybe a white/black feather hat thing that people wear in the UK to weddings.  The outfit is extremely cute and flattering -- I love it -- but now I'm panicked that it isn't appropriate.  Is it too black?  Too white?!  Too black and white?!?!

I don't go to that many weddings and I've never been to a wedding in the UK, so I would be really grateful to know if you think it's okay since I want to make a good impression.

Very cute dress. Do you have to wear a jacket? Can you wear a wrap instead? I would wear a colorful wrap, maybe teal or green. Just to add some color. Do you have a picture of the hat? Does your boyfriend know if its common for women to wear hats to weddings in Scotland? Sorry for all the questions...ashamed

Brazilian, you are the best for always replying to my freakouts about this!

I don't have to wear a jacket -- the idea of a colored wrap is a nice idea. I had gravitated towards the white blazer because I thought it would be more wearable afterwards and also warmer, but I may reevaluate.

I have NO idea if I'll end up doing the hat or not! I don't have one yet.  Most of the women there will be wearing them, but since I'm American, I would be excused if I didn't. Could be fun, though... Here's an example of the sort of thing (crazy, right?!):

I love hats like that! I have always wanted to wear one...but where would we really get the chance to? If you have the hat, bring it and then decide that day if you want to wear it or not. If you have to buy it, I guess it depends on how much it is. What about doing a large flower in your hair? Same sort of fun accessory, but easier to pull off.

I like the idea of a hat and wrap as well! I'm personally not keen on the idea of wearing a white anything - even a blazer - to someone's wedding.

I love the dress.  It's so pretty.  Not too black or too white... though, I feel black at a wedding is perfectly fine.  I wouldn't wear a white blazer or wrap, though... something with color would be more appropriate.

OMG I *love* the hat idea. I've always wanted to go to a UK wedding or fancy event so I could have an excuse for one of those crazy toppers. I think you should totally do it.

I agree with the wrap idea instead of a blazer. Cobalt blue, red, emerald green, deep pink...you have a lot of wrap options. And I think your dress seems totally appropriate for this wedding, given what you've posted.

Most importantly, what SHOES are you wearing?! Can't wait to see them.  :)

hey, i'm from the uk so maybe i can help a little although i haven't been to very many weddings... i think the dress is great and agree with the others that a wrap or even a pretty cardigan or something might be better than a blazer. you don't have to wear a hat, at the two weddings i've been to recently, probably a few people wore them, but the majority didn't. having said that, they weren't the most formal weddings. hope that helps! x

eee, yes, hats! I'm SO glad you ladies like the dress! Phew.  It is so cute on.

I will look into getting a colored wrap, but I am concerned that I'm going to be cold in Scotland, so that's why I gravitated towards the jacket!  Do you know who I was trying to channel wity my black and white?!?  haha!!!!  Kate Middleton at a real English wedding and Andie MacDowell at a fake one:

But I trust you guys and so I think I'll look into cheapie colored cardigans as well as
wraps!

I was thinking of a basic pair of black sandals like these:

I love that dress and I think the whole outfit sounds really cute!  You should totally wear a hat - how often do you get the chance!?

There are always tons of cute vintage hats on ebay.  You could get one that's just like an extra-wide embellished headband

Or if you feel comfortable with something more elaborate
