I am going morel mushroom picking, asparagus picking, and fishing with three of my best friends this weekend! We're renting a super rustic old cabin (has electricity, but no plumbing - but there is a bathroom with showers in walking distance.) The cabin has huge indoor and outdoor stone fireplaces, and it backs up to a pristine lake. They are providing canoes so we can go fishing too. I can't wait!!!! soooo excited... hee
here's what the cabin looks like (there's tons of tall windows that go all around the three sides - just none in the front):
this is a morel if you don't know what they are - I've been mushroom picking since I was a baby, so don't worry about me eating the wrong kind:
yay!
There is also a maple syrup festival in a nearby town, plus my uncle lives out this way and does the whole sugar shanty maple syrup thing, so hopefully he will give us some maple syrup too...
yay!

Wow, awesome! Is this the trip you needed the long-johns for? Good luck finding morels...you should sell them if you find any! The bf tells this story (all the time, I might add) about how before he knew how expensive morels were he found a huge one in his backyard which he swears weighed 200lbs. Sure sure. I assume the asparagus grows wild?? I've never heard of that but I've got quite an addiction to asparagus. Have fun!

yes, the asparagus grows wild, and I've already bartered sharing my asparagus spot in exchange for some mushroom spots from the campground guy
and yes, this is what the long johns were for...

I'm so jealous! I loooooove morel mushrooms! Unfortunately we had a late freeze so I didn't get any this year...sigh...
How do you cook them? We always fry them, but it would be interesting to try them a different way.
where are you Jahni? I have never heard of a freeze affecting them - they grow in one day... I would take my chances a take a peek (again, depends on where you are.) we have had warm weather followed by tons of rain, and 70-75 degrees this weekend. apparently people have been picking them all week where I'm going, and they expect this weekend to produce a huge crop with the sun and heat.
we make them just like you - lightly coated in flour and fried in butter... mmmm....

I'm in Southeast Oklahoma, but the place where we pick them is in Northeast Oklahoma. They are usually around for about two weeks out of the year there, this year they came up one week, and then we had a freeze and they didn't come up again :( ....and now it's really to late for them to come back...sigh...I'll just have to wait until next year...

that sounds like a load of fun, with the cabin and the syrup!!
i have to say though, that is the funkiest looking mushroom i have ever seen. i have a botaniphobia and if someone asked me to pick that, i would probably pass out.
lmao tashina I'm with you. that thing looks deadly.
