What if?

The other day I was getting gas in a borrowed vehicle. I only intended to put in $10 worth of gas. Well as $10 approached, I let loose of my grip on the nozzle, but the trigger thing was stuck and it kept pumping gas. I knew it would automatically stop pumping once the tank was full, but I didn't want to fill a large empty tank that wasn't mine! Finally after fiddling with the nozzle and nearly $30 later it got unstuck. Not sure if it was broken or what because I did everything the same how I always do.
So my question is, what if I didn't have a way to pay for the gas I didn't mean to get? What if I only had $10? What would the gas station do? (BTW, where I live most gas stations you do not have to pre-pay). Here were some of my thoughts:
*Hold me captive until I could call somebody to bring me the money.
*Write me a bill.
*Make me work it off, then let me go.
*They call the police.

Seriously, I want to know what would happen! Anyone know for sure?

I've actually had that happen before, where I forgot my wallet when I went to the gas station. It was about $45, and I didn't realize it until after I filled my tank (I was planning on going in and paying so I could get a soda too).

I explained to the guy what happened, and I offered to leave my cell phone as collateral. He said I looked trustworthy, and let me go home and get money, and I came back and paid him.

But I have no clue what would happen if you don't get somebody who is understanding. I guess maybe they would make you call someone or leave something for collateral?

I bet they would just hold onto your driver's license or something until you bring in the money. And then if you don't come in the time allotted they'd call the police.

I work at a coffee shop inside a gas station. As far as I know, if someone doesn't have the money or their cc is declined, the attendant will take down your license plate number, and if you don't come back in X amount of time, they'll call the police. If the person is in a borrowed vehicle, I guess they could either be honest and give their real information or be a jerk and let it be the car owner's problem. Of course, if it's a regular customer, they'll just take his/her word that they'll come back later.

My boyfriend's dad once forgot his wallet and pumped gas about 20 miles from home. The gas station attendent said that he had to wait until someone came to give him money before he could leave, or else he would press charges for leaving. He waited for about two hours before someone was able to rescue him.

My boyfriend had a similar thing happen to him recently... he asked for the attendant to give him $20 worth of gas and they gave him $60. He only had a $20 on him, so he couldn't pay for it if he wanted. He told the guy that he only asked for $20, the guy denied it, they argued a while. The attendant threatened to call the police, my boyfriend promised to pay the rest next time (since he was a regular at the station). I don't think he's been back since.

My friend worked at a gas station for a bit and I think he said they always just take your driver's license and when you pay, you get it back.

Weird. You guys don't have prepaid gas? Our pumps in California won't pump unless you pay them first.

Same here. Ever since gas started to really spike a couple years ago, they're all pre-paid.

Yeah, I always have to swipe my card first before I get gas.

If you live in a place where people don't frequently steal gas, than I suppose those stations would be slow on changing to prepay only pumps.

Ours are all prepaid here, too.
