Ingrown Toenail?
Permalink Closed

Okay, I think I have the beginning of an ingrown toenail.

On my right foot of the big toe nail, on the outside (left side of the nail) it is slightly cutting into the skin. However, I also feel like I have an excess amount of raised skin between the edge of my toe and the nail.

I feel like I've heard that you aren't supposed to trim the side of the nail, so what can I do to keep it from getting worse?

I'm going to get a pedicure at the end of the week, and will ask the pedicurist, but I figured you ladies would have an idea or experience or two.

Ugh, I'm sorry!  Ingrown toenails are the worst - I'm prone, and have been since beginning to wear pointe shoes for ballet 12 years ago hmm.gif.

First thing's first - douse your toe and your clippers in hydrogen peroxide to kill any bacteria.  The only thing worse than an ingrown toenail is an infected ingrown toenail!  If the excess skin between the toe and nail seems to be kind of tough and dead-ish, you could attempt to trim it away.  If I don't do this, I am totally asking for an ingrown!  If you can expose the corner that seems to be cutting in, you can see if it's got a sharp corner or something.  If it does, try trimming it and then filing if possible.  If you've cut any skin at all, another douse of hydrogen peroxide.  Then if you can slip a bit of cotton between the skin and nail, do that.  If not but you were able to remove the pokey bit of nail, lube it up with neosporin and but a bandaid on.  I have the best luck healing when I repeat the hydrogen peroxide-neosporin-bandaid routine daily until it's no longer tender.

Let me know if you need any other tricks, and I hope your toe feels better!

i hate to rain on your parade, but to be honest I wouldnt get a pedi. cry unless you truly believe it is a sanitary environment, it is pretty much like asking for trouble.  (I speak from experience and having worked in a spa) sorry to be the bearer of bad news)
