weekend eating... ugh.

I'm so disgusted with myself!

I'm can be really good about eating healthy -- during the week I'm fine, and I bring healthy lunches to work and eat balanced dinners with lots of fruits/vegetables.

But then the weekend comes, and it's like I turn into a different person. Yesterday I helped out at an all-day volunteer event, and they provided breakfast and lunch.  But the breakfast was those enormous muffins (that are probably like 800 cals), and lunch was sandwiches, potato chips, and soda.  The food was out all day, and everyone I was working with kept munching, which made me want to eat, even long after I was full.  Before I knew it, I'd eaten almost two of the huge muffins, two individual bags of potato chips, and a sandwich.  I felt so gross.

Then I went to a friend's party right afterward, and again -- everyone else was eating/drinking, there were lots of treats right in front of me... and of course, I started eating everything in sight.  I lost all track of what I'd eaten.  And I was completely stuffed, yet I just kept on eating because it was THERE.

Today, I feel completely disgusting.  I know it was only one day, but this is typical of how I am when I'm in social situations or when treats I shouldn't eat are readily available (work coffee cakes, bar snacks, etc.).  Does anyone have any advice?  If I keep this up, my hard work during the week won't matter.

I know what you mean -- we feel this need to reward ourselves for a week of goodness, and it gets out of control. Maybe trying to allow yourself a specific small reward on the weekends will help?

I can't remember where I heard or read this, but having rules for yourself in social situations can help.

- always keep at least one person between you and the food table as a "barrier" when possible

- use the smallest plate available or a napkin

- never have more than 2 items on your plate at a time

- assess what foods are available and make a deal with yourself that you will only eat a 1-2 bite serving of only 1 "bad" item (choose carefully)

- once you have food, try to socialize as far away from the food table as possible. if you have to leave your friends to get food, it might reduce your trips to the table.

- you can eat all the raw veggies you want

- bring something healthy with you if it is socially appropriate

There were more but those are the ones I remember at the moment. Try not to feel too guilty, I have heard of far worse diet sabotage. Just get back on track today and maybe treat next weekend like weekdays to make up for it. Good luck!

Edit:

I forgot to add one of my personal tricks. When I know I should stop eating, I immediately reach for a piece of gum. It sort of finalizes the meal as a point of no return. :) Once the gum is in my mouth, there's no taking it out to eat some more.

just remember it was only one day and scale back the next few, maybe work out today.  just don't let yourself keep slipping and don't feel too bad- everyone has occasional days like that.
Things that help me- drinking water and tea make me feel full.  Chewing slow and spacing yourself will give you time to decide if you're hungry or not.  Ask friends to split things like a giant muffin or a piece of cake.  Reminding myself that bathing suit season is in a month and a half helps too...
Really though, the best thing for me is to keep my mind occupied with other things and to not be staring at food.   If i'm excited about something, or talking to someone, i won't think about food.  its when i think about food that I eat mindlessly.  Like right now, i'm reminded about the caramel ice cream i have in the fridge.  if i was cleaning my room like i'm supposed to be doing, i wouldn't have thought about it.

Oh man I had a horrible day yesterday as well. It was the result of not eating enough on Friday, working out and burning off what I did eat late Friday night, and sheer boredom yesterday as I stayed home alone this holiday weekend instead of going somewhere else (ie parents house). So I ate and drank all night last night as I played online and watched tv.

But today is much better. I allowed myself yesterday but today I decided not to slide down that slipperly slope. I'm sure you will rebound and be ok :)

Everyone slips up now and then. If I do , I just tell myself to eat less during the week and work out a bit more. I also will cut out diet sodas and to much caffine for a few days aftering eating bad. It helps detox my body and keep the weight off or get be back on track.

I wouldnt worry about it, just dont let that be your regular habit. That can be rough on your body.

If I'm worried about that, at the beginning of the party/event I pick out two foods to eat. I may still eat more of those than I'd like, but not having any variety makes me much less inclined to fill up my plate again with the same stuff.

I really like this idea, and I'll definitely try it out next time I'm at a party.  I'm always guilty of wanting to try a little bit of everything, and a little bit turns into a lot of everything.
