When people give you unsolicited fashion "advice" or "tips"

I have this acquaintance who thinks she is a fashion expert. In my humble opinion, she is no such thing. In fact, I'm pretty sure she shops the Lerner's catalog. Anyhoo, she always tries to give me "advice" and "tips". We are not on the same page. I have told her this (kindly, of course) and she will get this really smug look on her face, because she thinks she is the shit. It's really annoying.

An example of her advice: I was wearing jeans. She told me I should put a belt on. I was like "Why?" She told me that if a pair of pants has belt loops, you have to wear a belt. I told her I disagree. On another day, I was wearing jeans with a belt. She said "Thank you for finally taking my advice and wearing a belt with your jeans." I told her I wasn't taking her advice. I wore the belt because my jeans were a little loose in the waist, plus I liked the way it looked with my outfit. Then I had to listen to her whole theory about the belt loop thing again. sleepy.gif, angered.gif , and ignore.gif

Maybe it's me, but I believe in keeping my opinions to myself unless specifically asked, and then I proceed with extreme caution.

So, what do you do with unwanted fashion advice?

geez! That sounds like something my mother would say. Except that by now she's basically figured out I don't listen to her "tips" and only tells me if something is absoltultely atrocious , like I ripped a big hole in the butt of my pants or something lol

I think I'd get so annoyed with her that after a while I just wouldn't respond to what she says - no explanations, but no pretend complacency, either. I'd just look at her and go "hmmm"

How old is she? Your age, or is she a bit older?

Ha ha ha... your story reminds me of my friend's experience years ago.

One day, Trina* came over after a shopping trip she took with her (let's just call her interesting) cousin, Barb.

Exasperated, Trina exclaimed, "Barb insisted that I buy the extra large tee-shirt because it has more material and I would get more for my money!"

Your acquaintance sounds like a doozie.  Is she annoying in other ways?  Perhaps it's time to cut ties.  I know it sounds harsh, but I only suggest that in the face of extreme circumstances.  I had to do it once; and I have very few regrets.  Some people are just energy-suckers.

At the very least, I would let her know firmly that--while you value her as a friend--you have no need for fashion advice from her.

Haha your remark about the Lerner's catalog made me giggle out loud. I think with most annoying people you just have to let their comments roll off your back. No sense in getting worked up about it - she's still going to be shopping the Lerner's and you'll still be stylin from this decade - so might as well grin and bear it... and maybe toss in a dig about her mom jeans every now and then :)

Totally bugs me when people do that! Dont offer the advice unless asked. Period. Besides that style is totally personal, in my opinion there arent any set "rules" , it comes down to how you embrace your own personal look.

I like the "Yeah I'm not a big fan of rules, fashion or otherwise, but thanks anyway!" said in an I'm-a-badass kind of way.  Usually brings 'em down off their horse a bit, and if not it at least convinces them to pity you in silence ......

You rebel you, no belt with your jeans .... oh my!  What would your mother think !

HA HA. Yeah, people should keep that advise to themselves unless asked for.

I have an acquaintance that manages a GAP store. Somehow she thinks this makes her the be all end all of fashion advisers and is always trying to give me the latest scoop, which is usually old news. Last week, she informed me that True Religion jeans were going to be huge. No kidding!

Altho, to give her credit, most fashion hits Seattle about 18 months late, so she often isn't too far off the mark. I'm lucky to have you girls to give me the heads up on what's coming.

How's that when we read the same fashion mags and can shop the same stores?

Anyways, I'd just ignore her.  That's what I've started doing when people find it necessary to comment on my weight.  When I don't make an excuse for myself they realize they were out of place and are uncomfortable with what they said!

Thanks, girls.

Elle, I like to live life on the edge and I express that by not wearing a belt. My pants could fall down at any minute! Those empty belt loops could get caught on something!

My mom would probably wonder why I was risking wearing a belt, since I inherited her extreme metal allergy. Belt buckles can be a hazard to sensitive skin. I live dangerously anyway you slice it.

My acquaintance is actually a nice person, it's just we couldn't be farther from each other in terms of personal style. Therefore, I keep my mouth shut.

These are hilarious stories - I agree with Pollyjean23. Time to clip this chick. If you can't avoid her, shut her up with a catty remark along the lines of 'your free advice is worth every penny to me.'
