Cali's prom post gave me an idea for poll. What was your prom dress like?

We only really had one big prom (we didn't have formals or junior prom or anything like that). I was kind of punk and had to be different so I wore a lavender satin bustier dress that had a short lavender and black lace poofy skirt. At a time when the style was long slinky black or red dresses, I really stood out.
I also had elbow length black gloves and these really cute black patent wedges. I felt like a million bucks. I still have my dress stored in the back of the closet.

My junior prom, I had a white dress that I loved. I still have it, although I have nowhere to wear it anymore. When I got it, I loved it so much that I thought I'd save it for my wedding! I've revised that thinking... I can't exactly remember the top, I feel like it had a halter top but it may have just been spaghetti straps (and I still have all my prom pictures at my parents' house, so I can't look at them now). The bust had all these sequins or sparkly somethings and as you went down there were less and less until at about my waist there were none. Kind of like it faded off. Does that make sense? It was floor-length and while the skirt wasn't poofy, it wasn't skin tight. I guess it was kind of A-line.

My senior year I wore this dress that turned out to be pretty trendy, my cousin and I got the same one! It was this orangish/reddish color that changed to gold depending on how the light was hitting me. It had spaghetti straps and it was low cut! Looking back, I'm surprised my mom let me wear it! It had an empire waist and there was one vertical ruffle from the empire waist to the bottom of the dress (it was floor-length, too). I don't know how to explain the ruffle thing. I've thought about getting it hemmed to cocktail length so maybe I could wear it again, because it is actually really pretty, but I can't think of an occasion that would call for a sparkly/color changing low-cut dress lol

First: I wore a very simple wine-colored dress, floor length, a-line, with a jeweled clasp at the waist. I got a great 40s hairstyle for the occasion and wore my grandmothers (huge) vintage, tear drop earrings. That year I wanted my hair and jewelry to play center stage, so I chose a simpler dress.

Second: I designed my own dress. It didn't turn out quite as well as I'd wanted (although in the next couple years, my "idea" was everywhere) but the color was amazing. It was this gorgeous deep blue/green color that made my eyes look amazing. Again, I went with beautiful (huge), vintage, light blue, crystal
earrings. They were amazing. I still have them but haven't worn them ages. I should break those out again.

Third: Black slip dress with a silver, knit chain (esque) material over it. I loved it but in retrospect, I didn't have the proper undergarments. IMO, I slightly resembled a stuffed sausage.

Oh and one formal dance I wore a purple, sparkle, velvet dress. I'm so not kidding. I can't even imagine such a thing, except that another year I wore a blue, sparkle, velvet dress!! Hee. I did have some kick ass blue velvet shoes and silver shoes to go with the, though. Man, fashions change, eh? (I'm going with that one instead of thinking I had no taste because that's too much to take.)

I only did prom once so I'm putting my homecoming dresses too:

HC1: long black slip dress with chiffon layer and beading on the bodice
HC2: knee length red dress with ruching at the bust and a bunch of straps at the top (it was a knockoff of this Nicole Kidman dress that she wore to some awards show)
HC3: short fushia-ish dress with a bunch of ruffles
HC4: below the knees, sleeveless navy wrap dress with an empire waist
P1: long brown jersey dress with a sweetheart neckline with brown sequins at the top and a halter coming from the center of the bust

I looked like I was a teenage bride. I wore a white corset top dress w/silver embroidery and the skirt was a white tulle and floor length. I *think* I wore matching white or silver shoes. I knew I had to have it when my mom got all teary eyed when she saw me in it. Now that I think about it, I wish I would have gone with a difft color and less *bridal* look.

DH (my bf back then) wore a black tux w/a silver vest and tie, accented w/a pink bouteniere (sp?)

My junior prom dress was so pretty! It was a high, round neck with skinny straps (almost a halter, but not -- know what I mean?). The back was low. It was black satin and very form fitting, and it had an empire waist and tiny little sequins at the top. I bought it for $30 on clearance! I wore it in 1997. My sister wore it so much that she had it altered to fit her for her senior prom in 2002.

My senior prom dress was a little more 90s. It was a dark green satin sheath with wide straps. It had an empire bust too, but the entire top portion was dark, dark green velvet (almost black). It was long and had a tiny little train. It was very 90210!

Eek!  Mine sound so bad in comparison, but I guess they were cute in their day.  In 1987, I wore my hunter green taffeta floor length gown adorned with bows (this was to Winter Formal, though).  Next year I wore a short shiny purple number to my future husband's Junior  '88 prom ( I was a Freshman) and big hair.  Next was black velvet with sequins.  Very short.  That was '90 I believe (I think I had big hair.  It's a safe bet).  For the '90 prom (my junior) I wore an amazing form fitting white dress iwth ruffles up the side.  My accessories were red bows on my pumps (to match my husband's red bow tie), and my BIG HUGE hair.  ARGH.  My last prom I wore a strapless gold lame dress with a sequined bustier and my BIG ASS HAIR.  Please keep in mind that I graduated high school in 1991, and don't judge me too harshly!  wink

#1: cheap short sparkly blue thing that I hated (but it was all I could afford)
#2: big white poofy number that I actually considered using as my wedding dress
#3: gorgeous purple gown with a sheer black floral overlay that laced up the back.

I found a pic of #2

Ah, prom.  My dress was a dark teal satin bias cut tank dress with a modest scoopneck.  I wore it with silver shoes that just made me all sorts of happy.

I actually liked my prom dress - I was in sort of a minimal phase, but it was nice with my coloring and very flattering.  Granted, I think it got thrown out after college at some point, but it was the last long formal dress that I've worn.

#1 Deep deep purple, Tank top straps, velvet top empire waist, shiny silky bottom

#2 Spaghetti strap, Silver shiny material with a black lace overlay, very medieval princess

#3 Deep red strapless with very full floor length skirt,  beautiful black beading on the bust- I still love this dress too bad I don't fit into it any more

My junior prom dress was like a corest at the top. It was baby blue with some silver too, and the the bottom was poofy. It looked like a cinderella dress, so the shoes I wore had to be completely clear, so that they looked like glass slippers. I wore my sister Halleybird's dress senior year. It is a really pretty dress, and now it fits me and not her :)

I didn't go to either proms at my high school, but I designed a dres that never got made.

It was a spaghetti strap babydoll dress, very short, with a bead-encrusted bodice. I had several colors in mind. Oh well.

My Jr. Prom dress was a very pale pink, almost white. It was long, a-line, backless, with a square neckline. It had a few crystal embelishments, but notover the top. It was very simple. It was the first dress I tried on, and I loved it. My Senior Prom dress was anything but simple. It was not my first choice, though... I had gone to a bridal shop and special ordered a beatiful, slinky, fushia, beaded, long sheath dress. I tried it on in yellow and it would have fit me perfectly -- no alterations necessary -- but the dumb lady ordered the wrong size and it didn't work out. After hearing the sad news, I went dress shopping with my mom, aunt, and best friend. As a joke I tried on this big, poufy, strapless aqua dress with tons of beading and crystals on the bodice. I didn't expect to like it at all, but I actually loved it. It was completely different than anything I thought I wanted... and WAY more than I wanted to spend... but I loved it, and my mom, aunt, and friend all agreed. I thought that my dress would stand out in the crowd, but it turned out that big dresses were the big thing that year. Who knew?

Your post me made laugh! I went to prom in 1986 and I wore a lavendar satin long dress. No adornments on the dress but it did have ... HUGE puffy short sleeves with rosettes and a sweetheart neckline. I had bad "wings" from a new perm and got lipgloss on the front of my dress.

At least 3-4 other girls at the prom had the same dress in different colors.

Those were the days - my date and I didn't hang around long enough to worry about it though. Thankfully we had photos made and then went to a party.
