Are you Odd?
Permalink Closed

Do you have odd habits or a different way of doing things? A friend of mine the other day told me I was odd and meant is as a compliment. So I figured I'd share some odd things I do and you can share yours to me feel more normal.

Ok #1 I hate when my food touches, I'll actually avoid eating foods that have touched. I even have a made up word for it. Meschino. (prounounced mesh e no)
#2 I duck when in parking garages just in case
#3 When at an ATM I like to use the Spanish option. I don't speak Spanish but I think it makes getting my money more fun. (this is the one that got me called odd)

I have a ton others but I think this is a good start!
Now what are yours?

lol! you're too much!

I duck when we drive under bridges/overpasses. And I sit up taller when driving past firehydrants/trees (kind of like my head is jumping over it)

I eat my pizza crust first---that's all I can really think of for now...

I am odd too.

1.  I HATE when my food touches on a plate too.  I love the divider plates (my mom keeps them at her house for me to use during family get togethers and holidays).  If my food touches I will eat up to a certain point of where it touches and then I won't go any further.
2. I dislike ketchup and won't even touch it to pass a bottle.

3. I drink out of a coffee cup everyday, but I only put water in it.

That's all I can think of for now, but I know there are ton more.

1.  I am an anti-food-toucher, too.  (In fact, I'm going to inform my DH that there are others like me out there, because he is always teasing me about it!)

2.  I am a picky eater, so I'm forever picking out bits of food from a dish, or just eating around the parts I don't like.  I especially loathe huge chunks of onion.

That's all I can think of for now.  Most of my strange habits have to do w/ food.

Y'all are too much! Hilarious. Personally, I love it when my food touches. I try to make as many combo dishes as possible, just so more food can touch.

My weird thing is that I count. I count everything and anything. Especially if I'm under some sort of mental distress. During law school, I could have told you how many steps it took to get from each level of the parking garage to each of the main areas of the school (library, certain classrooms, common areas, etc.). This is the sole reason I can't stand spinning. The clock is right in front of me and I find myself doing odd fractional counts based on the number of minutes for a certain part of the class and the number of times I pedal. It disturbs me so much I avoid the class at all costs. (I turn most of my counting escapades into some sort of fraction debacle - I can almost always tell you what portion of the day, or project or walking distance or whatever, is left at any given time.)

I am also odd.

I feel you on the food thing! Everyone always tells me it ends up in the same place anyways. Yeah, but that doesn't mean food that touches doesn't alter the taste when it's in my mouth!

I apparently hold my pen really oddly, I kind of make a fist and wrap my whole hand around it.

And, all of my friends make fun of me because I apparently ask really stupid, weird questions. Like, one time I was at my friend's house, and I asked her why she had a pair of rubber gloves in her basement. Everyone just looked at me like, WTF?

Eh, I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them.

1. Somewhat like Blubirde here but I don't count things. I have been spelling words out in
head since I was about 10 years old. I have to sound them out too (even if it's an easy
    word.

2. Before I go out somewhere, I pull on the door to make sure it locked. There is not set
number of times it's just until I feel "comfortable."

3. When I'm sleeping, I wake up everytime I turn. I don't sleep well. If I'm laying on my left
side and want to lay on my stomach I have to turn to the right and then down to my
stomach. I don't know why I have to make this almost 360 degree turn to do that.

4. I have to wipe down my utensils, plates and rinse my glasses before I use them. Yes, even
if they are clean or just washed.

All ya non food touchers need to form a group! I'm a food mixer.

I'm a step counter too! At any given time I know how many steps I've taken since the last crosswalk or tree or whatever. If I'm walking the dog, I tell him how many steps it's been and I usually tell him that he's taken twice as many steps since he has twice as many legs.

When I'm walking with someone, I always need to have the other person to my right otherwise I feel really out of sorts.

DH and I don't have "sides" of the bed. We just sleep wherever we end up and it seems to be pretty random. I don't think its all that strange, but my friends tell me it's odd.

I am super odd and it is nice to know that I am not alone. Here are some of mine:

-I loathe white socks. I feel that the devil spins them from his personal loom.
-I HATE the Dave Matthews Band. While I do not consider this odd and just a musical preference all of my college friends have assured me that this is an extremely alien thought.
-I drink at least two gallons of water a day and cannot even function in the morning before I have had at least two glasses of water. (This is a medical thing, but my BF still finds it odd.)
-I HATE cheese. Particularly the smell of Kraft Mac & Cheese. When I was in college my roomies were forbidden from making it if I was in the house because I would vomit from the smell.
-I love 80's hair bands. I cannot get enough of them.

When I microwave food, I alway heat it up for 2:20.  I'm trying to break out of this, but for some reason I feel compelled to press 2:20.

I hate when anyone leaves time leftover on the microwave. Even if its not at my house I have to delete it.

When I got to the bathroom in someone else's house and the shower curtain is closed, I have to look and make sure no one is hiding there. Every single time.

I make up little songs in my head about really random stuff. Like if I'm walking and I see a random person in a red shirt I'll make up a little song about them "red shirt lady, walking to the store, red shirt lady, reddddd shiiiiirrrrrttt!" or something to that effect. I have lots of songs about my pets too. And food. I like to make up songs about what I'm eating.

I rarely call anyone by there proper first name. I make up nicknames for everyone. Especially the pets. I don't even call my mom "Mom", she has about a thousand nicknames. I don't think I've called my best friend her first name in about 10 years.

I thought of a few more: I am OCD about list making, too. Having lists help me organize my thoughts and I love writing everything down. I like being scheduled.

I find patterns in things. Like tiled floors or those dotty ceiling panels. Sometimes it drives me crazy because I can't stop seeing the patterns.

Its quite possible I am certifiably insane.

oh so odd... thats me!

i am also part of the "non food toucher group" or "meshenos" i like that word Collette!
my mom and i both are like this.  we get made fun of mercifully at holiday family dinners.  esp. b/c we get up to wash off our plates in between each serving.  but- some things we do allow to touch like noodles and mashed potatoes.  but pretty much everything else can not touch!!

i count words on my fingers when i am stressed out.  and it must end evenly or with the three middle fingers.  i've NEVER admitted that i do that to anyone... and it looks so weird to write it to you guys.

since i travel a lot for work, i've developed a weird routine upon checking into my room.  the first thing i do when checking in my room is to check behind the curtains, under the bed (if there is an "under part", behind any doors, in closets and behind the shower curtain for strangers/murderers, etc.  i then go and lock the door.  then i start to unpack and i must unpack EVERY SINGLE ITEM including all toiletries even if for one day.  then the next morning I put everything back.  for some reason it is extremely gratifying to me to do this.

I do this too, bex!  Except I do it with my feet.... kind of hard to explain now that I think about it!

I also have to plug my ears with my fingers if a car I'm riding in approaches another too fast.  I was in a wreck when I was little and the sound is the only thing I remember, and it was the worst sound ever.  I think that's where that comes from.

Third, I CANNOT look at, smell, touch, and/or hear about eggs.  When I was 10 I was told that eggs were unfertilized, liquid chicken.  I've been scarred for life since.
My final thing is that when my house phone rings (thus signaling a telemarketer)I answer in Chinese and yell at the person in Mandarin.  It's really fun to hear them stutter and get all flustered.  And it's good for me because it keeps me from getting out of practice

I love this one! It ALMOST makes me want to get a home phone just to yell at telemarketers in Thai (because mine is rusty and won't be fluent unless I go back to Bangkok for 6 months).

I also, like wetbandit42, hold my pen really oddly. I hold them in a fist. I have proceeded to tell anyone who gives me crap about it that it divides the weight of the pen between more than two fingers.

these are hilarious! i love the one about sitting taller when going past trees hehe.
the only thing i can think of for me at the moment is that i play stare-out games with my dog. obviously he doesn't understand and i always win, but its still satisfying

I never thought about it that way, lilykind!

I also hold my breath when I go past a cemetary.

I also check the handle of my apartment door right after I lock it, even though I know it's locked.

I check to make sure that my door is locked at least twice before I go to bed, and I sleep with my bedroom door locked at night.

I also do the counting thing...with step and whatnot. But also anytime that I hear music (I think that one comes from years of dance training)

this might have to be the most entertaining thread ever.

- another meschino-ite here... i go nuts at buffets. when i see people load up on 9873451978 different foods with the sauces running all over each other, it makes me physically ill

- i love water. nothing is more refreshing than an ice-cold glass of water, but i refuse to drink any that's lukewarm (or even slightly warmish).

- i hated peas as a kid. i used to swallow them whole like tylenol, and i still do that sometimes.

- i have to make lists. compulsively, really, for the stupidest things. it calms me down when i'm overworked/stressed, and i love checking them off. i go through post-its like a fiend.

- i only drink red wine out of a straw. i hate how my teeth get that reddish tinge.

Thought of a few more:

Like Squishy, I am a list maker. I rewrite lists if they become unorganized lists. I just recently realized that my coworkers have caught on to this habit.

Along the food not touching lines (which I hate), I also don't eat cassaroles. I feel like it is taking everything that is about to expire in your fridge and cooking them together. It's like putting all this food that isn't suppose to touch and making it touch!

I love reading everyone's strage habits! I want to take some of you counters to Vegas. =)
