This has me super weirded out (long)
Permalink Closed

This is the weirdest thing.

So, about 2 years ago when I worked downtown, I left my office one day to walk down to an antique store.  This guy approached me and I instinctively hugged my purse a bit closer to me as asked if I knew of any tattoo parlors or piercing places.  I told him there was one around the corner, but he told me he'd been to that one already, but that it wouldn't do because his girlfriend wants to get her naval pierced and that place charges $60 and he wants to find somewhere cheaper.  I told him I had no idea and then he started asking me questions about how naval piercings work--like what exactly do they pierce?  By this point I was feeling weirded out because I felt like he wanted me to show him my belly button, which I was not about to do.  I ended up turning around and going back to my office because I just felt too weird about it.

Well, when I went back to my office, I told my coworker (female, about the same age) about the incident and she said the same thing happened to her like a week earlier.  Same guy, same story about not wanting to pay $60 for a naval piercing.  Creepy.

So, then like a year later, I had gotten off the elevator at work and in the other elevator was this girl who worked on my floor and THE SAME GUY.  Only the guy didn't get off the elevator (we were on the top floor of the building so this was weird).  I didn't recognize the guy because it had been awhile, but I overheard her say "sorry I don't know anything about naval piercings."  I asked her about it once the elevator doors closed and she told me the same exact story as what had happened to me.  And when she told her coworkers about it, they had all had the same thing happen (and one of them stupidly showed him her belly button).

Fast forward to today, I had walked to Starbucks on my lunch break and as I was leaving, this guy approached me and asked if I knew of a tattoo parlor or piercing shop.  I think I instinctively knew something was up, but then when he said that his girlfriend wanted a naval piercing, but he didn't want to pay $60, I loudly said "You asked me this before a year ago!" and I calmly walked into the nearest store and he got on a bus.  (The shop owner was super nice and offered to beat his ass.  )

Anyway, what is up with this guy?  The whole encounter has me feeling a little shaken up.  I was by myself and the street wasn't busy just then, so I was a bit scared.  Plus as DH pointed out, if he was really looking for a tattoo parlor, he would have found one by now, so that's clearly not what he's after.  Plus, all the people I've talked to are mid to late twenties and were alone when this happened and even though every instance was daylight, there was no one around really.  Part of me wants to call the police and tell them about this, but I'm not sure what to say--technically he's done nothing wrong.  But it just creeps me out.  (I'm not sure my reason for posting all of this--I just feel weird about the whole thing.)

OMG. That's just creepy. And bizarre. I'd be weirded out, too.

Okay, that's totally weird.  It'd make me uncomfortable if I heard about it a few times in one month.  But repeatedly - YEARS later?  I'm creeped out just reading that!  Maybe he's mentally unstable somehow and he just asks the same question over and over... but still, very odd.

Ehhh....mid to late twenties I'm guessing?  He doesn't look homeless, nor does he look well-to-do.  He doesn't look creepy either, but that means nothing.  He just looks like someone you wouldn't give a second glance to, which I think is part of what creeps me out--that he's so un-remarkable that even though I've seen him three times now, I don't know that I could give a description of his face.

I had an incident somewhat similar, although my repeat asker was a crackhead definitely out for money. Maybe yours has a weird fetish. I'd call the cops.

Me too.  At the very least, he's being a public nuisance.  And there are plenty of people to back you up.
What did his face look like when you told him he'd asked you that before?  That is hilarious.  What a turd.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news here...but you do really need to call the cops. Don't even wait for the next time you spot the guy- although that would be helpful. The cops need to know that there is a man who appears to have some sort of wierd sexual fetish, and this is the kicker...that's approaching young, women. While he may be harmless right now, he maybe won't always be. At the very least, the police need to know that he's out there. They'll probably come down and try to talk to the girls at your office building who you know who have been approached as well and will work up a description of him.

While the belly button thing is super creepy- I've had that experience with a foot fetish guy. While I worked retail out in Pittsburgh we had a man come in and would try to steal women's shoes (that they owned!) and would ask women to walk on his face. We evantually just kicked him out everytime he tried to come in but we weren't the only shoe store in the area that he frequented. My boss took to calling the cops everytime he came in. They would come down each time- and did seem to appreciate that she called. He would hang out in the nearby department store and wait for women to get on the elevator by themselves and try to take thier shoes while alone together. Serious creep.

Philadelphia actually has a serial groper out on the prowl currently. This man approaches women and forces them at gunpoint to take off thier shoes. He has attacked 7 women so far- some he has sexually assualted, others he "merely" gropes- sucking on thier toes and other wierd business. His assaults have taken a clear escalation pattern.

My point here is that there are dangerous wackos out there that may not appear to be dangerous, just creepy, but the cops need to know anyway.

Totally agree. Call the police. His behavior may start escalating, and obivously this guy does this alot if it has happened to you 2x and several people you know as well.

Always be proactive with these people, better than having to react later to a scary situation.

You guys are totally right--I'll call the cops tomorrow and at least file a complaint.  In my old building, we got the guy on the security camera and I think the building owner may have called the police on him.  So hopefully this won't be the first report on this guy.  *crosses fingers*

Relrel--you're totally right about escalating behavior.  I took a self-defense class and I remember them saying that people that expose themselves are trying to see what they can get away with, which is why the police take it so seriously.  First they'll expose themselves, then they'll grab a woman, then they'll see how much further they can take it.  Scary.  So yeah, I'll definitely call the police tomorrow.

Question--do I just call the sheriff's office?  What do I do, exactly?  Obviously since it's not an emergency, I won't call 911, but I'm not sure what to do or who to try to talk to.  Ideas?

Maybe call 311 first -- often, they'll direct the call to 911 anyway, but at least you won't feel like you're being alarmist over something unnecessarily.   I'm sure they'll know where to send you.  Good luck!

You should probably just call your local precinct and ask to report suspicious behavior. I also found this link for you...it might help a little.

Muah!  Thanks, relrel!  I'll give them a call in the morning.  That'll at the very least make me feel more proactive.

Goodness - that is scary!  I'm glad that you are OK.  And I agree about calling the police.  Having your building's security on notice is also a great idea.  Stay safe!

You should totally report it - for all you know there could be tons of women who were beaten and raped after being asked about their belly buttons. Its the kind of question that seems weird and silly but then puts you off guard. If he is doing it to this many people its only a matter of time before he "acts" on it, at least to some degree.
