Raising your credit score
Permalink Closed

I have a fairly high credit score, between 700-750......I pay all bills on time, only have one VISA credit card to my name and 2 department store credit cards with no running balance.......how can I get my credit score even higher?

A friend of mine just confided that her credit score was about 810. How do you get an 810+ credit score?

some of it has to do with the age of your history, so if the card you have is new, your score wo't be as high. depending on what the limit already is, it might help to see if you can get an increase.
700-750 is great though- there's really no reason to want better.

Check your history and see if there are any negative reports, then dispute EVERYTHING. Don't apply for more credit, too, or let anyone else check your credit for any reason. It lowers your score everytime there's an inquiry.

I know it helps your score to keep a balance on your cards (not maxed out of course!). Charge a little, and pay a little each month.

I do think having a long term loan you pay over at least a couple years helps.  That shows you are responsible for a large loan and have paid on time every month.  My first try with credit was a 2 year car loan and after that I had a great credit score.  My current 5 year loan will be up in 2 years and then I should have a fabulous score.

Suze Orman's Young, Fabulous and Broke has a lot of really useful information on how to raise your credit score.  It also deciphers how your score is calculated, which I found very helpful.
The book can be quite basic at times, but overall I think it is very informative and offers some pretty good common-sense we should all already be doing this sort of advice.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.  With a score in the mid-700's you already have prime credit.  Raising it to 800 isn't going to do anything for your rates.
