Where did all the cute clothes go?
Permalink Closed

Is anyone else having a horrible time finding any new clothing that is flattering at all?  The trends (volume, skinny jeans, empire waists, etc) have filtered alllll the way down to the cheapy discount places, meaning I can't find a damn article of new clothing to save. my. life!

It's either basics absolutely devoid of any ornamentation, or drapey, floopey, bunchy MADNESS!  I just want some casual, cute things that are not $340 and that FIT.  There are no tops that do not make me look pregnant.  There are no jeans that are fewer than 4 inches too long or large enough to put both pinky fingers in.  There are no dresses that do not droop to my calves and swallow me whole.  BOXY.  FRUMPY.  ICK!

I have been (non-thrift) shopping 8 times in the last month, and have come away empty handed all 8 times.  Not one new item of clothing purchased!  And, we're visiting Denver next month and because I can't find anything to buy, I don't have anything to wear there!  AHHHHH!

I am officially flouncing trends for the duration!  Is anyone having as much trouble as I seem to be?  If not, where are you buying your clothes?!

Oh honey, I'm having the same problem.  I'm actually loving the way things look on other people.  When I get my Anthro and J.Crew catalogs I see tons of things I like.  When I shop other places I see things on the racks that I think look cute.  But, when I get them on my body, I think they look awful.  I've bought a total of 1 top in the last 5 months, and I'm actually thinking about returning it.  I haven't bought a skirt of pants in months either.

I've gained some weight, but I don't think it is all me being paranoid.  I just don't think the current "looks" favor some body types.

I've been getting my kicks buying assessories - my hat, earings, and headband collections have all doubled since last summer.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSss!!!!

the couple times that it has been warm enough to shop and i have the day off, i will go to the fitting room with probably 1 or 2 dozen pieces and MAYBE, if i'm lucky, leave with 1 pc. (my apologies to all the SAs).

i WANT to spend my $$ because i have gcs, i haven't really shopped in a long time, and because i need to for the vacations.

i know part of it is that i'm really picky and i've been so focused on saving lately that it takes a really good item for me to "splurge", but damnit i want to buy decent clothes and there aren't any!!!  (cue the whining).

handbags/jewelry/art/home goods are another thing though.  i've found too many that i want but don't REALLY need.

Me, too.  I was being really hard on myself over the 5-ish lbs, but 5lbs can't make absolutely all clothes fit like crap!

Word.  It's not even that I'm being super cheap about it, like I would be w/out the gift cards.  Even the more expensive stuff isn't cute!

I really, really need some decent tops.  Everything I have right now falls into 5 categories:  Super casual, Office attire, things that are strictly for warmth, things it's still to cold to wear, and things that have paint on them.

Thanks god! I thought it was just me and I was a big fat pig! I just went to Neiman Marcus, saks, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom and literally tried on every dress there and none of them looked flattering on. They are either 1. Too Springy as they are bringing out the spring/summer stuff already or 2 way too drapey which does not look good on my curves or 3 super low but which makes me look like a stripper because of my boobs which is not the look I'm going for. Was so depressed after shopping.

I totally agree. Shopping has been unbelievably frustrating lately. I don't like anything I find. I've just been buying up jewelry like its my job.

I'm totally with you!  I have had this mad urge to shop lately and I cannot find anything that I really want.  It probably doesn't help that we're kind of between seasons right now.  There's just nothing that I really want.  I've wanted to treat myself for my new job, but I haven't found anything that I really want to spend money on.

On the other hand, we've gotten a bunch of things for the house and our living room is finally starting to resemble a room in which adults live, so that's a plus.  I plan on just buying home stuff until March or so.

I've been feeling the same way! It's really frustrating, because like you, Elle, I still have gift cards left from Christmas and since I haven't found anything good in awhile, I have money set aside to spend... and I find NOTHING. I'm trying to be open-minded, but nothing flatters!
For awhile I thought that I must have an incredibly odd body shape, but I've never had this problem (to this extreme) before, so I have to believe it's the trends.  I just want some fun, inventive basics that I can wear to work and/or on weekends, and everything I find is either too springy, too drapey, or too blah.

There are alot of trends that I really dont like right now. However I do love the trouser fit pants that are finally coming out. I just bought a couple of pairs and I adore them.

I have been buying alot more basics this year, and alot more accessories so high fashion doesnt seem to be to high on my list.

I'm with you on this, Elle. I have already decided this will be the season for me to buy new sunglasses and maybe a really nice watch, and if I'm lucky, BR will come out with a knit top I can wear. I've had a problem for the last couple of years with the empire thing: Where are the cute spring tops for women with breasts? (I'm talking about tops that have room for the breasts to fit into and not spill out of. We're not all 34B.)

ugh, I hear you. I'm pretty much wearing boring t's every day because that's all I can find. I hope this doesn't last too long...

in the meantime, I'm stalking last years anthro stuff on ebay.

Yeah, I'm sick of this. I'm a size 2 and EVERYTHING makes me look huge. And all those shapeless smocky-type dresses look like something 1970s hippie moms bought for their toddlers. I AM NOT A TODDLER. I have a BUTT. And the tops look like sewing class experiments. This. Must. End.

I’m also having a hard time trying to find cute clothes for spring. Maybe it’s still a little early. I’m hoping more cute stuff will come out soon. I’ve been looking for cute casual dresses and skirts, but all I seem to find are weird shaped things with big ugly prints. I just want a simple solid color A-line and/or wrap skirt. I can’t find one for the life of me! I’ve looked on ebay and every possible website I can think of. I even googled skirts. Nothing. And I’m not having much luck in other clothing categories either. What’s the deal spring designers? Release the cute clothes already!

ITA.  I will find a cute top, try it on, and there's sooooo much excess fabric that it just looks tent-y and gross.  I finally have money because I've been working but I can't find anything I like.

While I tend to like most of the spring trends, lean tegs and flowy tops/dresses (b/c I have a little pouch in my belly and leaner calves), I can sympathaize and agree. I, too, have come away from more shopping trips with accessories and home stuff or lingerie, over clothing articles.

I think our classic Bootcut pants still work great and are very flattering.  I also like the leaner wide leg trousers/jeans (i hope that's not too much of an oxymoron).

I still work my blazers and some fitted tops with layers (and even sometimes flowier tops I want to de-volumize).  I know some of you gurls totally rock the DVF wrap dresses and that style always looks great!

Here's some look I found online that might adress some of the issues I've read about.  hth!

I hear you all on the spring trends - boring to me, really.  Nothing I'm dying for.  Unflattering tops for sure.  Acessories and shoes seem to be what I gravitate towards to spruce up the waredrobe.  Cute mini skirts though - maybe pick something up on that end. Denim pencil skirts too.

EXACTLY. I'm a C cup and Holy Support, Batman! I see tons of cute styles in tops but the Empire waist cut does *nothing* for me. I don't want to see my breasts cut in half by that style of top, and I'm pretty sure no one else does either.
