I have an appt today for a dermatologist. My mom advised me to tell the dr. the reason I am coming is for a "face rash" rather than the real reason - which is basically acne. She says otherwise my insurance won't cover it and I will be billed. What do you guys do when you go to the derm? I feel like if I lie about why I'm there, I won't get treated for what I need! If it matters, I have Oxford PPO and expect to pay a $20 copay for visits and prescriptions. TIA.
Acne is a medical condition, and many treatments are covered by insurance (as long as you're seeing a doctor your insurance covers, that is). It's usually only when you want lasers/peels/injections that treatments aren't covered. You should expect to pay a copay on whatever creams/washes/pills they prescribe, just like you would for any other prescription.
There should be a number you can call on your insurance card - they should be able to clarify what's covered and what isn't.
