Does anyone here live in multiple places?
Permalink Closed

I know a lot of people have summer/winter homes, etc.  I want to one day be at a place where I can live multiple places a year (maybe once I'm working for myself)- I was thinking how nice it would be to live at home for a few weeks a year, or split my time between the west and east coast.  I know this is sort of an alternative lifestyle- but I'm wondering if anyone else does it?  I don't know if i'd do it by renting/subletting or by owning.

I don't currently do it, but I do plan on being bicoastal in the future. I'd like to own property on both coasts...I'm a Gemini and would rather own two smaller condos in great locations as opposed to one giant house in one place.

BF and I have toyed with buying property maybe in Miami as well as Los Angeles since he's an FL boy and Miami is way more affordable than NYC (my hometown). We're so used to LA property costing a pretty penny that almost everything else seems like a bargain.

I have a friend who is in the same field as me but gets to be bicoastal because his job requires him to fly to New York (from Los Angeles) so often. The job pays for all his accomodations/incidentals whenever he's in NYC.

i am currently looking into purchasing a place in santa fe.  i actually communicated with dc a couple of times about how she does it.  in santa fe, since it's somewhat touristic, a lot of people have management companies who get things ready and manage your property while you're at your other home and in between different guests.  this is an ideal situation for me since it would help pay for my home.  also, when you plan on "visiting" you would just not have guests during that time.  santa fe is great because you don't necessarily have to have a car if you are walking distance from the "city", and it has some skiing which makes it desirable year 'round.  the other ideal situation for me would to have guests stay for a month or so at a time so that i don't have to worry about filling it on a weekly basis.

those are all things why i am researching santa fe in particular.

now, if i can find a way to fit a wyoming home, a house on the lake near austin, as well as a loft in the downtown city of austin.

a girl can dream, right?

My Aunt has a condo in Key West as a second residence and I stay there enough it feels like my second home.  The thing I like most about it is if I need a quick get away I can jump on a plane with my makeup bag and be set.  I have everything I need there (clothes etc) so I never have to worry about packing.

The main draw-back for her is trying to maintain two places...when something goes wrong or a storm is coming through she has to fly down herself, get me to fly down, or depend on a friend down there to check out the house, board it up (in the case of hurricanes) etc.

I can't decide if it would be worth the money (taxes, investment, upkeep) to have a second residence or if I'd rather just go somewhere new whenever I have free-time.
