looking after leather boots?

i got some boots recently and was wondering if you need to do anything to protect them from rain etc? i noticed that a splash of water has made a little mark on them. i bought them to wear particularly when its raining so my feet don't get wet but i don't want to ruin them. what do you do?

I use a spray that protects the leather from water and stains. I think I got the spray at a shoe repair place.
