Just curious if anyone else is in HR and if you have taken the PHR exam.

I am not in HR now, but I worked in HR for 4 years.  I have taken the PHR exam.

How did you study? Did you take a class or get the SHRM study packet (the $300 set)?  Why did you switch?

I took a SHRM Prep class through a local university (DePaul).  I liked the class because the students were from diverse work backgrounds.  That allowed me to get different perspectives on several issues and assisted me in remembering things for the exam.  I also work better on solid deadlines, which I wouldn't really have if I was studying completely on my own.

I chose to leave the HR field after working in it for 4 years because I came to the realization that I didn't like the path my career/life was heading down.  There are a lot of politics, red tape, and bureaucracy that I did not like.  I also disliked the negative attitudes that people had about HR people and the fact that most HR people that I have known gave them a good reason to have those negative attitudes.  At the end of the day though, most of it was because I felt that I was wasting my talent, energy, and personality on the private sector.  That is why I am studying ot get my teaching certificate.

Thank you for sharing your views.  That makes me nervous because I have only been in HR a little over a year.  But, I have no idea what else I would do if I took another path.  Good luck in teaching!!
